A healthy mix of stocks, bonds, commodities and real estate was not an effective barrier against losses in the darkest days of 2008 and 2009 as nearly every asset class collapsed in unison. But James McCaughan, CEO of Principal Global Investors, explains the strategy that helped his clients outperform in a decade of zero returns.
